We made colored salt today since I wanted to do some art with it this week. Making colored salt is both useful(to use in projects) as well as educational since it involves mixing, pouring, and hands on experience with color.
Here's what you need: Salt, Food coloring, bowl to mix items together (ziplock bag or the above type plastic bowls), and spoons.
Deen poured some salt into each bowl...
Then he mixed the salt in...

Shake shake shake! (to make sure color gets everywhere)
When the color looks like its mixed in properly and is your desired color
spread it out on waxed paper for it to dry...

LOVE this!! Did you use regular table salt--you know, like Morton's? I want to try this tomorrow for one of our Open Ended Art collage elements.
Thanks for sharing this!!
Thanks for this! I've run out of glitter and keep meaning to pick some up, but I think I'll try this instead. It looks beautiful!
I've never thought of doing this before...I'll have to try it! Definately cheaper than buying colored craft sand!
Oh wow, this is such a neat idea. I think you could probably use table salt, course salt, or even sugar. This would be so fun to make patterns on paper with a glue stick then "glitter" it with the colored salts. Thanks for posting. I may try this with my daughter's class.
